Default Hmmmmm - where to go in October..

My Wife has another vacation in October and we're trying to decide on a route of things to see and do (traveling with 2 smallish dogs so "things to do" are somewhat limited).

Want to see Yellowstone but I believe that the weather in that area might be too big a risk.

Would like to take the Williams/Grand Canyon train but after that, what then (Zion/Bryce perhaps) ?

Florida to the Keys?

We've been to So. Cal. - up the coast to Canada - then back to Tx. via an inland route (and loved it).

I just returned from the narrow gage Durango/Silverton train, out to So. Cal., down to San Diego then back to Tx.

Any suggestions (we're in Texas, near Houston)

Anne beat me to it, come and join us us in Moab! It's right on your way to the Grand Canyon. From there you can go on down to Sedona AZ.

Thank you, but "camping" isn't my thing.

Moab is a social gathering of Bs. I don't consider the site as "camping" so much but maybe a place to get acquainted with the other B members you socialize with online and to compare real life notes about B life.

As for Yellowstone, it pretty much closes up by the third week of September. After that it gets cold. I experienced 18 degrees and snow the first weekend after Labor Day there.

Late September to mid October can be stunningly beautiful in the Midwest for fall coloring. My favorite areas are the North Shore along Lake Superior in Minnesota in late September, the Mississippi River valley the second week of October through Minnesota and Wisconsin and southern Indiana, especially Brown County mid to late October. Brown County may be only second to Vermont for fall coloring. The only problem is the temperatures in the north can get colder than desired in a B.

Next Spring we are going to drive the 440 mile Natchez Parkway in Mississippi on our way to the BEE Social in Louisiana. That might be a good October pursuit.

Yes, thank you, I know what the Moab thing is - what it's not is my cup of tea. Sorry but I didn't buy my Van to hang out with other owners.

I may ride the Williams train to the Grand Canyon then head over to Zion and Bryce - perhaps Napa and the Monterrey peninsula.

Would love to drive the West Coast on 1 and 101 but I don't think the wife would go for it 2 years in a row..?

Zion and Bryce Canyon are really beautiful. but call ahead to the park ranger office and see what the weather might be like a week before you head up there. I've seen some serious snow there once in awhile.

If you want to socialize stop by Ruby's Inn in Bryce about dinnertime. The food is good and you'll see a lot of European tourists as they all tend to gravitate there from the Grand Canyon...

Kodachrome Basin, the Maze.. Southern Utah's all good.

Thank you - I've printed and "filed" that information for possible future use

ON EDIT: Cornbread Red

I just googled "Ruby's Inn in Bryce" and after reading these reviews I believe I'll pass:

In the fall, I might visit :

I'd like to get a few bottles of NK'Mip Pinot Noir.

Thank you, but:

Been to Vegas probably more than anyone here.

Canada's pet restrictions are such that we'd have to drive straight there in order for the Dog's health certificate to stay valid (too much of a hassle).

I need a series of destinations to get excited about in order to look forward to a trip. So far that's only the Williams Grand Canyon train.

Poor timing on our part with the Wife's vacation being in October (uncertain weather) - we won't make that mistake again.

Whiskyecho

Where did you get that information that you need a pet health certificate to cross the Canadian border. All you need is proof that the animal had its rabies shots and that is good for 1 year.

We read a more restrictive requirement than you're suggesting prior to our '07 trip - I don't recall the internet site but it was such that maintaining a valid certificate wasn't practical for our travel plans.

Since we don't plan on heading that way again, I'll let those that are do the research themselves.

(thanks for the info however)

Thinking about going back to Durango, driving north, thru Ouray to Grand Junction, west to Cedar City, south to Williams and the Grand Canyon Train, southeast thru Sedona, west thru Show Low then back to Tejas (but not on I-10.

Just can't get excited about anything "back east".

I'm having trouble deciding on an October trip also. My 9 days has be reduced to 4 so I won't go far if I do anything.

Your trip sounds interesting. I think you like trains. Temperatures should still be good around those parts of the country.

The Durango/Silverton narrow gage was "special". Won't do it again this trip as we'll have our 2 Dogs with us - so - we'll drive that route. Ouray has had good reviews for beauty.

With the Grand Canyon train however, the RV Park has a very nice kennel in which we can leave the Dogs for the day while we ride the train (we've stayed there before, seen the kennel and met the kennel minders - so no qualms about leaving them).

May not visit Bryce and stick to Zion - or - may bypass both.

I just can't get enthused about this trip..

Pack your snow shovel, W.E. Forecasts for much of Colorado above 7 thousand feet is for snow showers and lows in the 20s already.
