Default Re: Baking Bread in Crock Pot

sadly my experimenting did not turn out well

Way overcooked on the outside. A chunk of it stayed stuck in the crock pot.

Next time I would:
1. mix it and let it rise in a separate bowl
2. try a more traditional recipe (less water and kneading would be required)
3. fold and shape the dough so that it can turn out looking like a loaf of bread
4. set it on parchment paper in the crock-pot

I don't think my small crock pot gets hot enough for a 1 1/2 pound loaf size so I'd probably reduce it to 3/4 or 1 1lb size.

I had fun trying it though

Is that crock pot a 12V DC model? Just wondering, and where you got it? You've probably mentioned it somewhere, but I can't recall.
Perhaps greasing the inside edges of the pot might have reduced the stickem' effect?
Parchment paper is probably a good option.

It's AC 110 volt but at 180 watts on high it is easy to run on an inverter. It came from Canadian Tire and is the "Crock-Pot" brand 2.5qt size $16 on sale and probably around $20 regular.

Yes, I should have at least greased the sides and bottom. I think I'll cut some thick slices of this "loaf" and use it for French Toast tomorrow. It would probably also be good if used for a grilled cheese sandwich.

I'd guess a 400W inverter would be enough, then. Thanks for the info.
We love French toast and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Now you know there is a difference in cooking in a crockpot vs baking in a crockpot. Bread normally bakes surrounded by heat of over 320 deg. F. To get bread to rise correctly you need an immediate high heat. I think on the road I will stick with a Dutch oven with the tri-legs and top with a lid you can place charcoals on.

Yes this definitely looks cooked instead of baked.

Not everything that looks good, tastes good, and vice versa. Your bread might be fine for the preparation ideas you've mentioned. What it looks like probably doesn't matter, unless you're trying to impress Buddy Valastro.
I'm inclined to avoid trying to bake anything in a crock pot, for the reasons mentioned, but will certainly consider lots of other types of stewable items in one. I like the dutch oven and charcoals on top idea, for our limited baking needs, since I'm definitely no "Cake Boss".
