Default Propane gauge

The outside gauge - can it be read with propane shut off ?

Yes.

There's a float on an arm in the tank. The gauge on the tank is typically controlled magnetically though so the reading can get out of sync. You can synchronize it when the tank is full by using a magnet to set the gauge to also read full.
