Those two antennae are just WiFi whips that mount directly onto the Pepwave. They are for the WiFi as WAN mode and for retransmitting the WiFi within the van (probably overkill for that purpose--the Pepwave's built antenna probably would have been adequate.)

Not sure of distances, but the Nanostation can see a LOT more stations than any other device I have. I think that a half mile would be duck soup.

If you don't have a way to rotate the outside antenna, you would probably be better off with the Ubiquiti Bullet. It is just like the NanoStation but is omnidirectional, so it doesn't need to be pointed.
