I installed the Thetford C402 in our Sprinter and we like it a lot. The freedom of being able to dump the goodies in many places and not be restricted to dump stations is important for us. The previous experience of kneeling down to connect the hose, inserting it into dump hole with often leftover residual stuff from a previous dump wasn’t an enjoyable part of going camping.

The C402 canister is on wheels so it is easy to roll it from the campsite to a bathroom without moving the van. The volume of the C402 is 5 gal. which is about 1/3 of an average black tank so it requires more often dumps but for us this is not an issue.

We often go for just a few days camping, occasionally a few weeks at a time. From our early boating or camping trips, after a month or few of storage we were able to detect an odor if we left waste tanks not clean so it become habitual for us to thoroughly clean tanks after every trip. The cleaning always included rinsing step with clean water, a 30-min long cleaning job after every trip. With cassette, it is a 5-min. walk to the bathroom.

For short trips, 1-2 per month, small family my choice would continue to be cassette. Most if not all campers in EU use cassettes, I have never seen a NA-like dump station there. For long trips, large family a typical black tank would be my choice in order to reduce the frequency of dumping.

George.

Default Casette toilets

tgregg and GeorgeRa, thanks for sharing your experiences. Haven't heard anything negative about them yet, except for the obvious size differences from a larger black water storage system. But for my particular circumstances, the cassettes seem very workable and appealing - especially the dumping flexibility.
Thanks!

No experience with a cassette unit, but I will say that a proper black tank setup with a fully-sealed permanent macerator is extremely easy to use and nearly as flexible as a cassette if you carry a long extension hose (sealed at both ends when stored).
