Default Re: BP Gas Stations to Offer Free Internet Access

It does sound like a lot of stuff to carry, but I'd like the flexibility of having it available. For the most part, the OTA reception is good enough for us, however I've found that I depend on 24 hour news and business channels to keep me up to date on what's going on in the world, and generally speaking, OTA broadcasters don't provide that service. I'd like to be able to catch up on what the markets and the news makers are doing every once in a while, and our preferred CG options (NP, SP, boondocking) aren't able to provide the cable access that I'd need, that's all.
On your iPhone, what does an average month of surfing, emailing, Twittering, etc. cost you? If I might ask? Are you on a finite MB/month plan, and then you pay an additional charge per MB of data over that? Does your ISP have an unlimited voice/data plan, and if so, how much would that cost/month? Any info you could provide would be of help, thanks.

Mike.

Unlimited data at $30 per month with Edge and 3G connectivity. WiFi is a built in bonus that does not go through the phone company data stream networks. I mentioned in the other thread the Apple iPod Touch that has WiFi capability only and you don't have to pay anyone any kind of service fee in all these free WiFi places discussed. You can keep up with news and weather around the world through WiFi with it. Go to the Apple iTunes App store and search all the apps available. I have one that gives weather and radar for Canadian cities. I also read my local newspapers, USA Today, Fox News, BBC News, etc. on it and have apps for all the hometown local radio stations I normally listen to via internet streaming on the road. If you can get a radio station through the internet you can get it on the iPhone. There is now an app that does internet TV streaming but I have not tried it yet.

There are other phones that are WiFi capable but interestingly not the new Blackberry Storm. WiFi confines you to a place like a BP gas station or a coffee shop. 3G connectivity allows you to roam in the woods and pick up the internet. The beauty is you can be out in the woods holding the internet in your hand, not sitting at a table or sitting with a computer in your lap.

Thanks. I appreciate the additional input. I'll look into the IPod Touch next time I'm in the States.
Or possibly some other prepaid/free combination solution, as I don't want to get into a $30/month plan, if I'm
only down there 60 days out of 365. Can you get the Edge and 3G unlimited service as prepaid? If I were to
go to an AT&T or Verizon store and pay $30 for 30 days of Edge/3G, would they do that?
I understand that the Wifi access is a free added bonus on the IPhone and Apple Ipod Touch, if I understood you correctly.

I doubt you could get a pre-paid data plan. The iPhone requires a 2 year service phone and data contract and it still costs $199 minimum for the phone. The only way you can get one is through AT&T, Apple, and now Best Buy and Walmart, but you still pay. The iPod Touch can be bought in many places. Can't you get one in Canada? Keep in mind it is an iPod so if you like music you can't beat it.

Exactly. So IPhones and IPOD Touches won't help me much, being Canadian.I guess I'll just stick with my laptop (as good as the IPod Touch for wifi access) and the BP et al free wifi hotspots for now, until I figure something else out that doesn't require me to be a permanent resident. That's the problem, in a nutshell. Roaming costs me a fortune, and I can't get a contract down there (as far as I know, to date) because I don't have a permanent address.

I still appreciate the input. Keep the ideas and suggestions coming.
It all helps.
Mike.

There are no accounts or fees involved with Apple's iPod Touch. It is not a cell phone. It is an iPod with Safari internet browser and WiFi built in. It is completely usable by Canadians and is a one time cost to purchase the device. Check out Apple.com.
