Default Corrosion Repairs

On my "new to me" Xplorer, I see underneath that many of the steel supports for the running boards and the rear hitch assembly have some light surface corrossion. How would you go about cleaning this all up and painting/coating?

Chemical clean, wire brush? Is there a paint that can go on as-is? any product recommendations would be appreciated.

The body and frame all look fantastic, so I might just apply some undercoating. Even the wheels and spare tire rim were not corroded. The LP tank needs some love though. I wonder if I should try to clean and repaint, or just replace it.

Several companies, Loctite is one, make a spray that stops surface rust like you're describing and converts it into a paintable surface. I've used on the sheet metal parts of a BBQ with success. It dries black so that's how I left it.

I have had far and away the best success with the POR15 products. They work very well, just follow the instructions.

+1
just remember that by itself, POR15 does not like UV rays, so topcoat required if exposed to sun.

Naval Jelly turns thin layers of ferrous oxides to iron phosphate which adheres well to substrate, follow by rinse, dry, primer which could be zinc loaded and final coat. Don't use on loose layers of rust. Good luck, George.
