How to hold your Camp Site

How do you hold your camp site when you are away
from the site during the day. I am talking about non-reserved
sites that may be located in parks etc.

Do you carry a highway cone and leave it in place, put up a
sign saying you are coming back???

I would just leave a lawn chair or make site look like it is occupied. In lots of our campgrounds in this area you get a ticket which you can leav e on post at site which says its occupied. It has a date on it.

I bought a screen house from REI. It sets up quickly and I usually put it around the picnic table. I leave it up if I leave the site for a bit.

Not sure if all campgrounds will allow it but I did not get any complaints.

We have one of those bright orange highway cones(med size). Down the length of it I wrote in permanent, black magic marker..in good size letters " We will be back!". Rainproof, easy to clean & easy to store. It gets stored with "stuff" inside it when travelling...every inch counts in a "B"!
That's what we use and it has worked everytime.

Seems many use the day-glo orange warning "cone" method, but some of the other ways
mentioned are both clever and inventive.

Thinking about it some more, how about leaving a sign, "Gone hunting, back soon" ? Might work?

Just put a table cloth on the table and leave a chair . Always make sure you put your camp sticker on the post.

We are used to camping in provincial or state parks where you get a ticket to post. This summer on the Oregon Coast we mostly had to stay in private sites (no room in state) and we had quite a bit of trouble including having the chair left to mark site stolen. However the worst was when we covered the picnic table with a bright yellow gingham plastic cloth. It was windy so we rolled the ends in our levelling boards to hold it in place and pinned a Campsite Occupied sign to the end of the table. When we returned at dinner someone was occupying our site. They had thrown out the cloth and sign and were burning our levelling boards in their campfire!!
