Default Propane regulator contamination

The Marshall propane regulator on my roadtrek 190 was filled with a black gooey substance on the outlet side. It coated the copper tubing all the way to the first junction block where it splits to the various appliances. Has anybody experienced this when replacing the regulator and know what causes this?

its from the odorant, makes regulators prone to fail over time.

I posted a question related to this a few weeks ago and got quite a bit of response.
