Default sliding door step

Is there a manual way to extend and retract the 2012 leasure time free spirit sliding door step? Or turn off the automatic retract at engine start? This is a dangerous feature if someone happens to be standing on the step at the time the engine is started.

It would be more dangerous if they remained on the step while the van drove off.

I'm sure you could add a manual switch in series with the automatic control- you'd probably want a status light so you don;t drive with the step out and whack it off )

I think this is more an issue of everyone being aware of each other at departure time.

Chances are if they're standing on the step, the sliding door is open. Couldn't you add a switch to the sliding door preventing the step from retracting when the door is open?
