Yeah! Just make sure you put on your "Hazmat Suit" before entering your room, wipe down the bathroom before you use it as well as all the remotes, fumigate your luggage and clothes at checkout to avoid bringing bedbugs home, and you will probably be fine!

We are strongly in the camp of sleeping in our own bed and using our own bathroom--one of the big reasons we love B-vanning. That said, though, I have trouble relating to the "germs and bedbugs" rhetoric. We have stayed in many, many hotel rooms all over the world, and to my knowledge we have never gotten sick or had any other negative consequences from staying in a hotel or motel. I admit that our experience is biased toward higher-end accommodations, but there have been many exceptions over the years. As an aesthetic preference, I totally get it. But, I am skeptical that there is much actual danger, except at the extreme low end of the market.

High End Low End from the investigative journalism I have watched about hotels many over the years as well as my wife who worked her way through college as a cleaning lady/chambermaid/maid in some "high End Hotels" and saw how poor the staff training was and how little management really cared about the quality of your work as long as you were fast. And beware of those paper wrapped glasses in the bathroom, as heaven only knows what cloth and/or water what was used to wash and polish them

Yeah, I have seen lots of that reporting. It is all well and good to measure the number of germs on the remote control. It is just that when I look at the bottom line, I'm not seeing the consequences. Makes me wonder whether the right things are being measured.

Did you know that kids who live on farms have a dramatically lower incidence of asthma?

(Just an example of the larger point that there is lots we don't know about exposure to germs).

Guess you may have missed the fact that Bedbugs infested the most expensive high-end Hotel in Oklahoma City...during a stay by an NBA Team...needless to say, the team was upset and disgusted...the tests they have done and shown on TV support all the the above comments re: Remotes, Bathrooms, etc. Yikes, even one of the Maids mentioned not changing the sheets if they “looked ok”...

The bug argument is just silly. What dumps are you guys staying in? Heck, now you can find renovated lower end hotels like Red Roofs that are nice for $60-70. Let alone the nicer hotels.

You are fooling yourself if you think bugs dont get in the RV. And you guys are worried about hotel germs but have no issue with the day to day nastiness of living out of a camper van? That doesnt make any sense.

Im a borderline clean/germ freak. If I can deal with hotels and Airbnbs id think almost anyone can. Especially the use your own bathroom argument. Pooping in a van isnt at all a perk. Not only does the experience suck in comparison, but you know you gotta deal with the poop again later. Showers? no comparison.

But literally pooping into a tank on your van then emptying that waste with a hose into a bigger tank is fine?

What are we doing here? There are plenty of good arguments for RV travel. Cleanliness just isnt one of them.

Guess I’ll have to disagree there. We’re not talking here about campground dirt, but about communicable diseases and invasive insects.

Bed bugs have become the bane of hotel travel. It happens even in high-end hotels. Just had a friend visit who had to deal with bed bugs brought home from a reputable hotel chain. It was a painful, protracted, and expensive ordeal.

Since they are generally brought in as stowaways in luggage, you are at far less risk in your own camper. Your clothes and bedding do not share the same space with anyone else.

Pooping into a black tank and emptying it is as sanitary as you make it, and far more sanitary than most public toilets. At least you have control.

Just out of curiosity, how many people on this list have ever encountered bedbugs in a reputable hotel? ("I have a friend..." does't count).

I, for one, have not.

Thankfully I have not either. For the most part I agree. The sad part is being a reputable hotel does not exclude it in any way from bed bugs. All it takes is one guest with personal cleanliness issues, and then bam, you have the beginnings of a possible infestation. Being able to afford a nice hotel does not exclude someone from being a dirtball.
