Default Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors Replacement

As I mentioned here some time ago, I suffered a blow out when the metal stem of a Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors (TPMS) corroded and let go. On our trip to Wisconsin in July I got a TPMS dash light, and when I checked the tire pressure was down. I re-inflated and days later it happened again. I couldn't find a leak anywhere. Based on my previous experience, I decided it was time to replace all four sensors - they were approaching the end of their service life anyways after seven years and 145,000 miles.

Calling around, tire centers were asking $416 on up to replace all of them. I found Dorman brand sensors at Walmart for $27 each, which they installed for $10 per tire. That's a significant savings of about $250! Oh, and the stems were indeed corroded.

So, if you're getting phantom tire air losses, or your dash light is coming on and the vehicle is more than five years old, you may want to check the TPMS sensors, particularly the stems.

Thanks for the tip.
