Default Why are cushions mounted on boards?

I'm thinking of redoing my sleeping area, a dinette that converts to a bed. Wondering why the original seat cushions are attached to plywood boards. Does this serve any special purpose? I would rather just have them able to move around as needed. Any thoughts appreciated.

It would help if you said what Class B you are talking about, what type convertible bed you have and maybe photos because not all Bs have cushions fastened to plywood. There are many reasons. Maybe the design is such fastening keeps them from slipping. Maybe it makes the conversion from dinette to bed easier or faster. Maybe that's just the way the designer decided to do it with no specific reason.
