Default Shift indicatoring

Just purchased a 97 with a few problems. When I shift out of Park going to "D' it won't stop at "D" but goes down into second, is this normal? I have to bring it back to "D" also, the shift indicator in the dash, should it be lighten all the time? I can hardly see it days. Also, when I open the cab doors a over head light comes on but very weak and then it fades out, it is the same bulb that is nice and bright if I switch it to for reading

It is normal that the Shift Lever will go to second without pushing the button. You have to make sure you go only to D. It does make downshifting a lot easier but can be confusing.
