Default BBQ Ladder rack

I am making some changes in the garage in need to free-up space. In this process I decided to get rid off the Stowaway 2 Hitch box, it takes too much room.

Storing chairs and BBQ in the Sprinter is going to be our challenge. I am thinking about adding a permanent rear door ladder to carry chairs and the small Magma BBQ.

So here comes a question about a BBQ ladder rack. I used to use simple Camco racks on my previous RVs but am looking for a rack which would allow us to use the BBQ directly on the ladder and would be simple to mount and dismount.

If any one is interested purchasing my Stowaway here are details. https://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/...836204951.html

I am moving forward changing BBQ and camping chairs storage to the rear door ladder. Good starting point was purchasing a ladder by Prime Design, I picked it up locally and am absolutely impressed, superb design and quality, and no drilling required to mount. I started designing a quick BBQ mount likely using 1” 80/20 profile, ladder’s side extrusion bars inside slots are 1” wide.

My Stowaway 2 box went in a day.

Great ideas, thanks. I never considered a ladder and it's capability for carrying items.

Default sprinter rear door ladder mounted tire rack

hi there, here are pictures of my home made ladder mount, tire rack for my Sprinter 3500 Pleasureway.
No problems carrying one of the heavy Sprinter tires with a steel rim.
as you can see the tire when mounted to the 3 bolts is squeezed between the back of ladder and the steel rim. I just laid it on the rim to show relative size and made out of 1 inch tubulat square steel with foot plates to rest on ladder tread and hook over the tread above..works like a darn!!
hope this helps, cheers roger

Default Ladder

In looking at your pictures and am impressed but I have a question. How do you prevent the tire and mount from moving on the ladder?

Default sprinter rear door ladder mounted tire rack

Hi Doug, the rack mounts very carefully without scratching the door when you glide it in between the door and the in-situ stairs.
The rack rests on one of the treads with hooks over the tread to secure it at the top ..and there are one inch right angle cleats on the lower part of the rack which rests on the tread below. (roughly 10 inches between treads if my memory serves me.)
The 3 bolts that afix to the tire rim, protude beyond the stairs out the back (towards the rear of the van.) You mount the tire rim to the protruding bolts and as you tighten the bolts, the tire sandwiches against the outer side of the stairs, as the main body of the rack is between the van door and the stairs.
As you can see the amount of room between van door and the stairs to slide the rack into place, is limited and so everything has to be measured carefully.
Once in place it works well. I plan to modify the rack affixing to the three bolts a bar which I can then use to carry our tandem bike when traveling without a spare...yet to figure a design
Hope this helps, cheers roger

Recently I decided to get rid of our Stowaway box in lieu of using a rear mounted ladder for BBQ and chairs. This decision was based on my previous experience of using RVs’ ladders to carry BBQs and chairs. Stowaway was good but too easy to fill with stuff I didn’t use. Getting BBQ quickly out and setting it for cooking was a task often leading us to a restaurant.

I got Prime Design ladder and designed BBQ mount using my left over 8020 stuff like 2107 latches, corner brackets with aluminum plates. The mount objectives were: fast to mount and remove, allow for cooking on the ladder.
It takes seconds to attached the BBQ with attached mount to the ladder with 2 spring loaded 8020 latches. In the forward position (close to the ladder) it is ready for the road.

By loosening 4 wing nuts on the bottom of the mount I can move the BBQ away from the door for cooking and reverse for travel.

It is a typical basket case design, so it is a little on the overdesigned side, but it works. It is fast enough to cook any sausage, white, or polish, or even blood one on a rest stop.

I still need to get a cover for it.

For chairs I will use a simple mount like this one which I used previously - https://www.amazon.com/Camco-Support.../dp/B000EDUUJ4

Good afternoon
I realy like your BBQ setup on the ladder.
Is it possible for you to give me more info or pictures on how to fabricate one as i think this is what you did. So i would make it myself.
Thank you.

This BBQ ladder mount is designed for a Prime Deign ladder. Vertical ladder bars are 1” inside dimension and 10 series 80/20 aluminum extrusions fit well.

The mount is based on 80/20 t-slot extrusions precut at the 80/20 factory. I build a slotted frame and used these t-slots to mount the BBQ. Two rear latches make mounting and dismounting very easy, there are four ¼” studs on the bottom of the mount fitting into the 80/20 slot and latches engage into vertical the 80/20 slots.

We enjoy this BBQ a lot, setting it on the ladder takes seconds and I don't need to store it inside the van.

Thank you so much for your reply.
This is going to be a winter project, and finally get rid of BBQ inside storage.
Have a good day

Decided to add an aluminum storage box 24”W x 14”H x 12” D on my ladder. The ladder mount was designed for quick mounting and removal, no screws nor nuts just two quick release pins. All screws on the box are either sealed with sealing washers or sealing washers and 3M 5200. I added strap mounts on the top of the box. The BBQ can still can be use with box mounted.
