Wilton's Extending Wifi Range by Adding an Antenna. Very clever idea. Well documented and lots of photos.

Default WiFi antenna

Does it matter if you use a steel or aluminum can? Do you know if it works with a cell phone modem (Verizon)?

I asked Wilton and here's his response:

Mark

Steel or aluminum will both work the same. It does not matter.

There are plans on the internet for doing a cell phone antenna. The ones I have on my web page are for 2.4Ghz. Most cell phones run at a lower frequency and the antenna would be larger. These are tuned for the wifi range so if you had one of the new wifi phones then yes it would work.

Here is a link that gives some details:

I went to the Wilson site, followed a link to WPS Antennas and ended up ordering the Freedom Cell Phone Antenna with an FME connection and the Wilson adapter for my Verizon USB720 broadband modem (Ovation MCD3000 3.1 USB Modem). I'll let you know what happens. The antenna had a good review on CNet for use with a broadband card.

Thanks for your help!

I got my Freedom Cell Phone FME Antenna and Wilson adapter today.

Without it I had a connection but no bars. Sometimes I had one bar, but not often. The connection would drop off frequently. Sometimes I could not get a connection at all.

I've been using the new rig all afternoon and have not had a single dropped connection. Each time I check I have two bars!

P.S. Total cost was $66.35. $39.95 for the antenna, $14.95 for the adapter and $11.45 shipping to Ocean Shores, Washington.

Wilton, you ideas and ability to solve a problem never cease to amaze me; and your ability to get it out clearly and succintly for others to use. You helped me when I was working on a wiring for a macerator - once again thanks! Ron
