Re: ZL Power / Power Star inverter charger surge protection

Again, put risk into perspective. Homes typically suffer one potentially catastrophic surge every seven years. How often would that happen to an RV only powered maybe a few weeks every year?

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

Again, that light can only report one type of failure ... that is catastrophic. Sacrifice must not happen. That indicates the protector had to disconnect protector parts as fast as possible to...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

To an inverter/charger (or other appliances), it is nothing more than a direct connection to AC mains. One can confirm this with a meter or continuity checker.

Key to making that unit effective...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

The term surge protector so often used for RVs does nothing for our surge commonly known as a high voltage (actually a high current) transient. Undervoltage (ie sages) and overvoltages are a...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

Previously noted was: What does a Tripplite or APC solve? Over and under voltage is already solved in electronic appliances. Using that UPS to address same for motorized appliances puts those...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

For RVs, probably the most common anomalies are overvoltage and undervoltage. Both the Tripplite and APC ignore these anomalies.

Voltage can drop so low that incandescent bulbs dim to 50%...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

Unfortunately the Tripplite and APC do not work as described, In fact, each only claims to protect from a transient that typically does no damage. A thermal fuse disconnects protectors parts as...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

Ground fault is another human safety feature. Should be standard anywhere a human might be wet when exposed to electrical devices.

GFCI does not protect appliances. GFCI protects human life...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

Posted previously was: Protecting appliances is about the connection to earth ground; not safety ground.

Read what the Belkin claims to protect from. Typically only protects from transients...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

I don't know how it can detect an open earth ground. That three light tester can only detect an open safety ground. A test means a complete circuit must exist. Safety ground at a wall receptacle...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

Order would change based upon what must be protected. Three categories are human safety, electronic protection, and motorized appliances.

Let's discuss motorized appliances. High and low...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

Again, that question can only be answered by first defining the anomaly to be solved. Events such as open neutral or reversed polarity ( which does not harm appliances) can be solved or averted...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

I was not discussing that device. I was discussing the EMC-PT30: https://www.progressiveindustries.net/ems_pt30c.htm

The SSP-30 is a different device that does not protect from damage by an open...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

Plug a device that draws more than 0.5 amps into a USB port. A surge is created. That has no relationship to what a Progressive does. Or what a Monster power strip does. Or what a UPS does. The...

Re: UL 1449 Certified Surge Protection Devices for RVs

Define a surge. And good luck. The word comes without any numbers. Numerous and different anomalies are sold as a 'surge'.

The type of surge that required UL 1449 is completely different from...
