Good find, and not unexpected for sure. From the chart posted earlier from Volta, that would limit them to about 100 amps, so probably around 5500 watts. That kind of puts a kink in whole system,...

There are two different, but related belt tensions. We are used to setting the static tension which is uniform around the belt and causes friction to grip the belt, but it is not the major tension...

Yep :D

20 hp is a lot of power to take off an overhung load like is done with accessory belt drive. The front main bearing of the engine actually sees more side load than the belt drive tension...

I am with you on that. We keep hearing amps used for amp-hours all the time, and now we have a new term thrown in as "amps per hour" which I think is supposed to also mean amp-hours.

Of course if...

I wonder what MB is saying about loading a Sprinter with 20 hp of load at idle, for extended times?

IIRC, the Warp Core is also right about 20KWh, so similar on battery bank size. That would also...

Something is wrong with the numbers stated here, I think. Volta lists their alternator at 191 amps at 54 volts, and it is using 20hp at that point. That would be equivalent to nearly 800 amps at...

They are likely switching off the combined when they hit absorption because with lithium the batteries are going to be full anyway for all practical purposes. A lithium profile really doesn't have...

Even if they only took the approved 25 amps, it would be better than a 10% improvement over the approximately 165 amps you actually net over time with the Nations and a Baldor, so probably worth the...

Good information from Avanti.

Re #5, I don't know how the newer Chevy systems compare to MB, but they do stuff like selectively charge the battery during decel, etc, so may be similar. When I was...

The claim is that the vehicle manufacturers don't want/allow having a parallel extra alternator in the system, and MB even limits how much extra power they allow you to take off their stock...

In theory, what you say about recognizing the highest voltage makes sense. But in a typical case, if we have an engine generator running at 14v setpoint with 200 amps capacity, and solar at 14.3v...

As long as the batteries and/or loads are drawing enough power to keep the power sources from reaching their absorption settings, all of them will be putting out what ever they can as they try to get...

You telling us that the monster alternator you just had put in was cheaper than an Onan? That would be the alternator and regulator, and the mounting and extra hardware and wiring, I assume.

It was interesting that the add on alternator appeared to be a rewound factory case style instead of the one of the dedicated case DC Power units that Nations uses on many of their other units.

The BMS probably wouldn't be measuring current and wouldn't trip until the voltage dropped. By then the relay contacts could be fried or something else melted.

The only reason I can think of is that the electronics in the battery (BMS, relays, etc) are sized for the anticipated maximum load that the coach would use, not a much higher (maybe) starting load...

We have had this discussion several times, and I have to agree with both Avanti and Wincrasher, depending on the system you are dealing with.

With a vehicle like a Sprinter, where the onboard...
