I didn't realize the Chevy's were coming with a higher output alternator now. Check the RPO code sticker on the van for code KW5 - that's for the OEM 220A alternator.

If the wiring is...

That's interesting to know.

When Avanti mentioned "Mercedes has for some time published very conservative guidelines about how much current upfitters are supposed to take from the system." he...

Interesting that this topic came back up. Last night I was thinking that if I'm not ever going to get around to installing that new alternator purchased more than two years ago then maybe I should...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

I've got no idea about most of that.

As far as I can determine from forum posts and Facebook etc. RT has used a good quality aftermarket high amp second alternator from the beginning of the engine...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

Oops, maybe I bumped the wrong topic.

I'd go with one alternator. Just replacing the older 120A that is under the hood now with the brand new 140A unit.

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

Just bumping up this topic

Looking back at older posts, I can see that I was quite interested in this. Interested enough to install the fast idle switch and interested enough to...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

The new alternator showed up at my door today.

I'm looking forward to this project but won't start it yet. I've been thinking of a dual alternator setup but I haven't been able to source...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

I've been looking online at higher amp alternators trying to sort through performance claims etc. I found a CS144 type 200 amp unit for $270 that would fit my van. Others cost much more. So I did...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

I read through some posts on Facebook that indicate to me that the E-treks or semi E-Trek units are performing as advertised on the battery draw down. One guy has a four battery (I think) unit and...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

I am now 99% sure Roadtrek is using a second DC alternator under the hood and not an AC generator. I was fooled by the use of the word generator and the display of an AC generator in the early promo...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

OK, not exactly on topic but here's an update to this post: https://www.classbforum.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2668#p15768 about my alternator voltage when running the microwave oven.

I ran the...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

That's a savings of about $200 on the batteries  - good to know, thanks for the info.

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

The AGM I bought is up about $30 in 2 years. I just looked at CDN Tire and found a slightly cheaper group 31 at $260 x 2 plus 2 Core charges $30 plus tax = $617 :(

I remember working in the...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

You could get by with a new high capacity inverter charger with a transfer switch and some wiring upgrades. In the past you've tended to drive a lot so you recharge the batteries that way. Your two...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

The voltage reading was coming off the inverter display. The house and chassis batteries were combined two ways simultaneously through the isolator and also through a manual battery switch bypassing...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

Great points mentioned - thanks.

I did some testing today and it looks like a new high amp output alternator would be beneficial in my van. It's not a necessity so I don't know if I'll spend the...

Re: Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

I haven't looked for any detailed install docs for GM/Chevy, Dodge and Ford but I think there are products for those vans at the links above. The Mecman alternator I spec'd was for my GMC Savana...

Under the hood generators, dual alternators etc.......

I thought it would be useful to have a new topic that shows the many under-the-hood options available to use to generate power in an RV. I previously posted the four units in the E-Trek topic:
