Sure, the BMS might conclude that its associated battery has shorted but I would think that all it would do is shut it down until the load is released and would damage neither the battery nor the BMS.

As you point out, if the coach alternator croaks you still have ignition and propulsion but what about the reverse? Out in the boonies, with totally independent systems like RT uses, what do you do...
