Question Tips for 2 full days in Yellowstone in October? in camping van

Hi all

Looking for tips for Yellowstone - I’ll be in a self contained camping van - this October.

First night I have booked at Madison campground.

Then next 2 nights I was going to play it by ear and try to get any of these 1st come 1st serve that are open in Oct - Lewis Lake OR Mammoth OR Slough Creek

All 3 are currently 1st come 1st serve. (many of the other campsites are closed for the season now)

Yes I know the park is big, and bison slow down traffic, and I have to drive carefully due to possible snow and rain.

-> What is more scenic and closer to things I’ll want to see? Lewis Lake, Mammoth, or Slough Creek?

-> What things should I try to see? I’ll have 2 full days. (3 nights)

-> Any good casual places to eat along the way?

Thanks!

John

There will be snow!

Old Faithful Inn, Old Faithful Geyser. The lower falls in Yellowstone Canyon.

Lamar valley always has a lot of bison, but they may have moved to Hayden Valley by now.

There should be elk in rut walking around Mammoth unless the wolves have scared them into hiding. We saw a lot of elk on the way from Cody, WY to the East entrance,

I would stay in Madison because it's centrally located, although we always stay at Bakers Hole, a National Forest cg just north of West Yellowstone.

The lunch counters at all the grocery stores / gift shops throughout the park.

Thanks everyone who posted info and thoughts here.

So I'm back from my trip and it all worked out very well.

The second night it rained heavily then snowed heavily.... according to the staff at Madison campsite the weather scared off some people. They had a ton of cancellations, then most of the sites rebooked right away.

Ended up 2 nights camping at Madison.... then the 3rd night a few hours south of Grand Tetons

Saw bison, a grizzly, a black bear, deer, etc.

had a wonderful time.
