Please forgive if this doesn't help, but I believe it may be connected to the Sprinter interior lights, like those in the console above the windshield. If those are not set to come on when a vehicle door is opened, then the side step strip won't come on. I am not actually sure how those lights are controlled on the pre-2019 chassis, but I recall the newer chassis had a setting in the van computer system. I found this by accident when trying to prevent the one light above the passenger-side bed from coming on anytime a door was opened (it is an original factory-installed light when the vehicle was delivered to Coachmen as a cargo van). Getting that to not come on made that step strip not come on either.
