Default Fridge Selector

Noob thoughts -

Ok, let see if I got this right. On 3-Way units (Dometic)

1) Fridge selection to 'Electric" when I'm hooked to shore power.
2) Fridge selection to '12V' when not hooked up to shore power but the vehicles motor is on OR when using generator.

otherwise

3) Fridge selection to 'Gas'

Seems pretty straight forward. Will need to familiarize myself with the use of propane.

Might have to really consider solar.

I would think running the fridge on 110 volt would be better when running the genny. The heating elements usually draw 175 watts(check yours to make sure), or about 14 amps running the 12 volt heater. This is current that would be deducted from what your converter puts out in 12 volt mode.

Solar is a good idea for extended boondocking(more than overnight), but don't expect it to cover the electrical demands of a 3 way fridge using either of the heating elements. At least not without a very large and a bit sophisticated solar system and a large battery bank.

Propane really works just fine for the fridge.

If you were to replace that fridge with an efficient RV/marine compressor fridge, solar would become practical as the energy usage would be roughly one tenth of what the absorption fridge would use on electric, either 12 or 110 volts. Also on 110 volts you would need to power an inverter, more watt hours.

Questions? Ask away. Lots of experienced talent on this forum.
