Default Remote disconnect

I just need some elementary education on remote switches. My understanding is that the switch sets off a solenoid in a relay that trips its main switch either on or off. If one was to trip that relay into the "on" position, does the solenoid remain activated to hold that switch in the on position? Or is its activation a momentary one to draw the switch into the on position where it "locks" by mechanical means in the on position. If latter, what turns the relay "off."

Probably NOT a very clear question.

thx.

See this info about Intellitec mechanically latching relay, it takes temporary power pulse to turn it on and off. Once it is in on or off state it doesn’t need power. Blue Sea has a similar battery disconnect relay with silvered contacts so it is better than Intellitec with plain copper contacts prone to corrosion.

In addition, the BlueSea unit has a mechanical backup switch that works without power and is capable of locking out the remote. They are also 500A. The Intellitec units are 100A continuous, IIRC. The BlueSea stuff is pricy, though.
