New and need quick advice

Hello to all 🤗. My name is Dan and I am new to RVing and to class B's.
My wife and I are looking at buying a 2007 Roadtrek Agile SS 4wd 6 cylinder with 160,000 miles. Well maintained with records. Has some wear and tear but everything seems to work. Asking $45,000. What do you think?

I usually stay away from used 4x4s.

Because you never know how the previous owner used (abused) the 4x4 drive train; was it lightly used on the slippery roads only? or was he into heavy duty off-road expeditions?

4x4 repairs are expensive.


The Sprinter 4x4 might be a bit different...
it is a part time 4x4. ie the front drive train is disengaged all the time,
you have to stop the van to engage it manually.
After you engaged it, if you drive the van above xxx speed,
the 4x4 will disengage automatically.

Of the 4x4 owners I spoke to,
Most of them have never used the 4x4 function. (except during testing).

Well, if the price is right, it might worth a look.

It says 6 cylinder, so must be NCV3. Interesting that Roadtrek does not show 4X4 option for 2007 or 2008 on their brochures, so perhaps an aftermarket install? Or the literature could be wrong, which happens a lot with Roadtrek.

IIRC, Mercedes first offered a 4x4 option for the Sprinter in MY2015. Before that, I am pretty sure it had to be an aftermarket retrofit. They were available.

Right. It had to be an after market 4 x 4 because Mercedes Benz hadn't offered a 4 x 4 until the spring of 2015 in the United States. I know because I could have ordered one but would have been delayed another 6 months and was unwilling to wait. Advanced RV at that time was the first converter to ship 4 x 4 Sprinter Class Bs.

Edit: Mike Wendland took possession of a 2017 Roadtrek and he mentioned he mainly wanted 4 x 4 which was not offered in his 2015 Roadtrek of 2-1/2 years.

So, the system will disengage in motion but won't engage until stopped which IMO robs you of the inertia you retain with a 4wd system that is normally disengaged but can be engaged (in high range) on the fly.

Good point! Now that I think of it, when crawling underneath I didn't notice anything resembling a transfer case!

Mercedes makes using a 4x4 a drudgery; I want to shift and go! I have a Chevy Pickup and Lincoln Navigator, both 4x4 with over 200K miles, and the 4x4 gets used routinely, serviced regularly and yet to have a problem....bet that Mercedes sees Shop Time..."oh, you didn't do this or that..not covered." Ron
