Default 1994 Coachmen Saratoga Cap Leaking.

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1994 Dodge body Coachmen Saratoga with a high top cap. When it rains it leaks water onto the dashboard. Has anyone dealt with repairing this type of leak themselves? Should I lift the cap slightly and put silicon or something between the cap and the body? What kind of rv silicone sealant should be used for this job.

Thanks in advance.
Ray

Ray, are you certain where the leak is coming from? It's usually from either the windows in the high top or one of the through-hulls on the roof; the plumbing vents, that sort of thing. And no, do not EVER use off-the-shelf silicone sealant on fiberglass, even though it's widely used by manufacturers because it's cheap and looks nice... for a while. But it won't seal well, will leak again, and is impossible to get cleaned off enough for a proper sealant to stick.

Use the proper type of Dicor RV sealant.

depending on whether you need it to be self-leveling or lay a caulk bead.

It is my believe it is coming between the cap and the top of the van (this van has no windows in the cap and no vents in this area). It leaked this area before about 6 years ago and I tightened up the screws that attach the cap. I would like to not go through this again if possible so I want to try for a more permanent fix.

Picture of the type of van I have.
