Default Camping World + UPS + Canada = ?

In July I went online and ordered $489.41 of merchandise from Camping World.

1. Mini Rug Roll, 25L x 2 1/2"W (13046) 1 @ $7.99 - In stock.
2. Oak Finish Hardwood Counterto (14092) 1 @ $29.99 - In stock.
3. Lights Outâ„¢ Vent (19495) 1 @ $8.99 - In stock.
4. Class C Tyvek® (21035) 1 @ $269.00 - In stock.
5. RV Leveling Blocks -- Set of 1 (24733) 2 @ $26.99 - In stock.
6. Qwik-Fill&#8482 Single 12-Volt (2703 1 @ $29.99 - In stock.
7. Qwik-Fill&#8482 Squeeze Bulb F (27039) 1 @ $12.99 - In stock.
8. Oak Message/Key Center (27710) 1 @ $12.99 - In stock.
9. Ultra Scissor Jacks (34586) 1 @ $44.50 - In stock.
10. Calibrated Level, pair (5905) 1 @ $6.99 - In stock.
11. Good Sam Club 1 Year Membershi (989801) 1 @ $12.00 - In stock.

Camping World tacked on a few charges:

Freight . . . : $90.33
Add'l Frt . . : $58.50
Handling . . . : $39.00

Hmmm… $187.83 for them to send the merchandise seems kind of high. The RV cover & scissor jacks might not have been a good idea………….

Camping World sent me 3 UPS tracking numbers. Oh no! That means 3 UPS brokerage fees and 3 UPS disbursement fees and taxes on all of that.

So I called UPS and they confirmed that there will be 3 UPS brokerage fees and 3 UPS disbursement fees and taxes on all of that but, if I can get Camping World to send something to UPS indicating that it's one order then there will be 1 UPS brokerage fee and 1 UPS disbursement fee and taxes.

I called Camping World and they sent something to UPS showing that it was one shipment but Camping World showed the merchandise total as US$665.24. So the UPS brokerage fee and Canadian GST tax and PST tax will be based on that instead of the US$489.41 I actually purchased. That error ended up costing me $19.81.

I got the third & final (I hope) invoice from UPS on Oct 2.

Now for the UPS charges: (in CDN$) Three invoices.

Customs GST......................3.11
CA British Columbia PST....3.63
Brokerage GST.................1.52
Entry Prep Fee.................19.45
Disbursement Fee...............5.85

Customs GST......................45.17 Credit
CA British Columbia PST.....45.17
Brokerage GST...................1.81
Entry Prep Fee..................30.28

Customs GST.......................83.89

Total: $149.54

Here's the breakdown in CDN$ (@ 1.0479 where applicable)

Merchandise........................512.85
GST&PST on merchandise......90.63
UPS & CW Ship & Hand........255.74

I'd have paid GST & PST if I bought in Canada anyway but I won't order from Camping World again because of all the shipping and handling fees. $255.74 is a lot to pay to get $512.85 of merchandise.

I saved $56.19 in brokerage fees by getting Camping World to explain to UPS that it was one order in three boxes not 3 separate orders. If I hadn’t done that the UPS & CW Ship & Handling would have been over $300!!!

I wish Camping World would offer UPS Expedited as a shipping option instead of only UPS Standard.

I've ordered a fair bit from Ebay and now know that if the seller states they ship UPS, I will not even look at the item.

I just bought a new PDA (HP Ipaq 6515) and ended up paying almost $70 in extra fees because of UPS. That's on top of the $20 shipping I already paid. Every time I've had something shipped to me via UPS, I get extra charges.

I've had numerous other items shipped via USPS and usually don't have to pay anything extra. At the most, I've had to pay a $11 Custom Handling Fee.

I just bought another item and the seller did not state they only shipped UPS. I didn't find that out until I was ready to pay. Since shipping was UPS, I contacted the seller and told them to ship it USPS or cancel the sale. They were nice and did ship USPS. The item arrived and no extra fees attached.

I find it strange how an item shipped USPS to Canada can have almost no extra costs but UPS strangely has all kinds of extra charges. Most items are suppose to be duty free since they fall under the Free-Trade Agreement but when the item comes via UPS, there's the Custom fees, Duty Fees, Taxes and who knows what else they through on.

I did the same for a while. If shipping was UPS only - I wouldn't buy the item.

I don't know if it is still slow but with the USPS + Canada Post combo it might be 30 days before I got my parcel.

UPS fees are:

(this is in addition to shipping charges and Federal and Provincial sales taxes)

1. Entry Prep Fee - $varies - On a $41.00 item the fee is $19.95
2. GST Tax on Entry Prep Fee (Government tax on UPS fee)
3. Disbursement Fee $5.85 - this is a fee because UPS used their money to pay the tax.
4. GST Tax on Disbursement Fee
5. C.O.D. Fee $4.25 - this is a fee to "collect" the money they used from you.
6. GST Tax on the C.O.D. Fee

That $41 item easily ends up costing more than $80 after adding shipping and tax on value of the item.

Within Canada UPS is great, it's quick and the cost isn't bad.

Wow, shipping cost you 50% of the merchandise total? That's crazy!

You probably could have drove there to pick it up yourself for that price.

I don't have the option of driving to the States. I have to drive around Lake Ontario just to get to a border crossing. I use to live an hour from the border. I knew a few people with had PO boxes at the border so things could be mailed there. Unfortunately, a lot of people will not ship items to PO box addresses.

It's hard to believe anyone would use UPS with all their extra charges. I shipped an item to a person a while back. He insisted I shipped it UPS. It took me almost an hour just to get the paperwork done. The item was a wireless card for a pocket computer that fit in an envelope. I had to fill out an FCC form, along with several others. If I shipped it Canada Post, it would have cost almost nothing to ship, there would have been no paperwork and the item would have had insurance included with an Express Post package. It cost him almost $60 by the time everything was done.
