Default Class B Diesel - when did DEF become needed

Does anyone know what year Mercedes put the system that requires DEF? Did they do that when they made the model change in 2006? It seems to me I have seen some as new as 2009/2010 that didn't use DEF?? I am looking at possibly buying an older model and pre DEF is attractive to me.
