Default Cruise Control

My cruise control in my 2006 C190 is inop. I will engage it at highway speeds and it will engage then after about a mile it disengages. I reengage it and after a few seconds it disengages again and keeps repeating. I shut off the the system and turn it back on and it just repeats. I performed all the diagnostic steps that are in my 2001 Suburban GM factory repair manual and all the steps check out correct. I replaced the Cruise control stalk with a new one and still the same. When it disengages you hear a faint metal click like a flasher coming from what sounds like under the dash. Any suggestion what to look at next. I would like this working when we take a trip. Thanks

That is a no brainer-take it to a Chevy dealer.

similar my 2001 gmc sierra

brake light switch

it's a $12 part ( amazon) , the hardest part is removing the spring clip, use a small screwdriver to pry up the clip and slide it back

the brake light switch had 3 sets of contacts, 2 normally open, 1 normally closed.
If the N.C. switch contacts are dirty or pitted or have lost tension, the CC goes off.

many many many electrical problems are dirty contacts in the connector- unplug and re-seat the connector plug 3 or 4 times before buying parts

I think you will find the cruise control module is very difficult to get to behind the engine up under the dash and it is no longer available as a new part. (2005) We did find one on Ebay.

Let us know if you find that true. Seems strange as the Express is still being made.

I am sure I do, as it would be in the factory service manual that I have. Like all GM service manuals lately, it is extremely hard to find what you are looking for, especially electrical, as there will be separate areas for ground, power, data, and for each device on the vehicle. It is also very likely that the wiring and controls could have changed over the years as they have put more and more stuff into the PCM and gotten rid of individual add on modules. There was a change in 2007 that went from cable throttle to drive by wire, so it is very possible it would have changed for the cruise control to put it on the same control as the drive by wire throttle.

hbn7hj, Mine in a 2006 is under the hood mounted on the firewall behind the air cleaner. Except for the stop switch and wires i am not aware of any cruise control components under the dash.

Booster, I was surprised to find a cable throttle and not drive by wire which my 2001 Suburban has. I know that GM split the wiring into many sections which can get frustrating. I called my friend at a Chevy dealership (service advisor) to also see if he can get a wiring diagram or suggestions.

Yep. Poor choice of words on my part. If you find a source for a new module let us know.

And I think you want a service manual for a Chevy Express, not a Chevy Suburban. It may not make a difference, but then there may be big differences between the two!

wny-pat, Yes service manual for the Chevy Express 2006. I already have the service manual for my 2001 Suburban. I have been referencing the suburban manual for somethings that maybe common but I am sure there are differences.

your profile says 2006 RV...is that on a 2005 Chevy ?

my 2006 Pleasure Way is on a 2005 Chev chassis, a year offset which is common with RV's

No it is a 2006 with GM manufactured 12/05. I forgot to mention it is a 4x4 converted by Quigley Motor Company.

I mentioned brake light switch earlier, here typical GM brake light switch showing 1 Normally Open switch, 2 normally closed switches.

easily checked in place with meter on the contacts- the connector aligns the contacts and they may slip out of position when the switch is unplugged.

on my 2001 sierra I experienced similar CC problems and also gear lever lock intermittently

mkguitar, I was looking at my old switch. Contact pads were where they should be, nothing burned and where the connector attaches all look good. I will get under the dash to the new installed switch and do a voltage test. Thanks

Could it be that you have a vacuum leak somewhere?

nicaland, No it is electronic, no vacuum. I did replace the only vacuum line which is used for the HVAC controls just because it was 15 years old.

I thank everyone for their suggestions. I found a cruise control module in a salvage yard. I installed it and finally went out for a test drive today and the cruise control worked great.

Congratulations and appreciate the followup! Not everyone does that.
