Default DEF issue. Help please

Hi All!! I am new to the forum and have not done a proper intro of myself. I am hoping someone can help me better understand my possible issue before I go to the mechanic today.

I have a 2016 Travato 59K diesel. I added 3 gallons of DEF from a pump at a Pilot truck stop. I then drove approximately 100 miles and my engine light came on. I am now getting a reading on my dash that says I need to go to the dealer and have my rig service due to DEF.

I have a code reader and it is saying the code is NOx Exceedance.

Has this happened to others and should I be as concerned as I am now?

Also I am from Massachusetts and am in Yellowstone on vacation. So not the best timing for this to have happened but I guess there never is a great time for it either.

Thank you for any help and information

Aaron

I can't help you much, since all my experience is with Sprinters, but:

EXACTLY the same thing happened to me in my MY2014 Sprinter-based rig. In the Sprinter, this fault puts you in a "x starts remaining" state, so there is no choice but to treat it as an urgent repair. I hope the Promaster is more forgiving. In any event, I ended up having both NoX sensors replaced under warranty.

The following is total speculation, but I have since stopped using DEF from the big-rig pumps. My theory is that maybe putting relatively cold DEF from an underground tank may be bad when introduced into a hot engine. This may be total BS, though.

Hi Avanti
Thank you for the reply. I think you could be onto something with the cold def in a hot engine.

I talked with a mechanic this morning. He can look at my Travato tomorrow. In the mean time he said I should take it on the highway and see if the code clears. As of now I do not have an X amount of starts showing although I am concerned that could happen.

Thanks again for the help
Aaron
