Default Door only key for 2018 Sprinter

We have a new to us 2018 Sprinter (Winnie Era). Came with two chip keys/remotes, which I understand have to be programmed by the dealer and are very expensive. What about getting just a metal key to operate the door? Is that something that a local locksmith should be able to do? If we are out camping, I'd like for each person to have their own door key...

Thanks

your local home depot carries chip keys for many popular makes, as does your ace or locksmith

you may not even need a chip key for the rear doors- ?

( don't tell anyone, but our spare key is hidden behind the fridge vent panel) when camping all the rv keys are left in the van and I only carry the van door key when hiking or at beach etc

If you don't get an answer from other Sprinter owners here then I'd say just try it. Might cost $2 at Home Hardware. They cut a key for me to just unlock a door for our Ford SUV & it works fine for that.

Hardware store chip keys are clones of existing keys. If your Sprinter is like my Ford SUV, the time to get additional non-clone keys is when you still have two original keys if you want to DIY the additional keys. Two original keys were needed for me to add an additional transponder key bought off Amazon for my Ford for example.

Home Hardware didn't even charge me to cut the $8 key I got off Amazon & programed myself for my Ford. Dealer wanted over $300.

I don't know if this info applies to Sprinters though.

I have a 2012 Sprinter; I think I paid $18 at the Mercedes dealer for a door only key; the parts department ordered it using the vehicle VIN#; as I remember I paid around $200 for a chip key Plus $75 for programming; I had to take the van in for them to program the key; this was about a year ago. I had two other chip Keys but apparently they had to have the van not the other keys.

I may have looked all the wrong places but I could not any one else who could/would cut or program the keys;

I ordered a door-only key from MB dealer. Had to show title. It is only the metal part, which is what I wanted. With some black electrical tape it can be well-hidden for emergency use.

Visited the local MB/Sprinter dealer today. They claim the only option for our 2018 is a "full" key/remote thingie and it's almost $400 with programming. And to top it off, MB currently can't program any keys, and hasn't been able to for several weeks. I'm guessing their crypto computer crashed and they don't have a backup!

I had an F550 Ford work vehicle with the chip key. I got a non chip key made in case I got locked out. When I opened the driver door, it started beeping. If you didn’t insert the chip key in the ignition within 15-20 seconds, the horn alarm would go off. I guess it was a theft deterrent thing. Maybe MB has that as well now.

I got a Master Key (just the blade) Part #169-760-25-06 for $24.75, a Freightlin key, (that's what it's listed as on the invoice) part #906-760-19-00) for $160.65. It cost $109.50 to program. Before the dealership would order the keys I had to produce the registration/title. I wrap the master key blade in plastic wrap and secure it to the frame in back of the RV generator in a magnetic hide a key container and stash the programmed key inside. When I used the blade to open the driver door the alarm did not go off. All this was done May 2020.

It sounds like the keys and door looks are worn out. Without such a cause, such a situation would not have happened. The car is quite old, and you should make some changes to it. I am not a master, but I would recommend you to change them. In general, the best solution would be to talk to a team of specialists. For example, when I had a slight problem with my door look, I called a group in my city. They gave me the best advice and solved my problem. I think no one could give you better advice than specialists.

I went to an automotive locksmith for replacement chip/remote keys for a Toyota. Waaaay cheaper than the dealer, and they did it while I waited. If your local big box store can't do a naked metal key for the door lock, I would suggest looking up local automotive locksmiths.

While I can't speak specifically for the Sprinter, it is not unusual that the manufacturer has a process for copying the ID information to a chipped 'blank' key. Usually the instructions to do this are in the owners manual.

Mostly all locksmiths charge the same price as the dealers. We were shocked when a local locksmith said £720 for making two pairs of keys. My husband started to fight with him pretty badly, and in the end, we turned around and left without keys, of course. Some locksmiths treat people as complete fools.
The following days, my best friend recommended a locksmith near me sw12, who charged us £250 for two pairs of keys.
