Default extra propane tanks

If I am going to be parked at one location for a while and want to extent my propane capacity by connecting two 20lb tanks directly to the propane fill valve of my 1999 RT 170, would this work? Is there anything in the propane system that is sized specifically to the tank (like maybe the regulator)?

My onboard propane tank on my 1997 RT 190 leaked, so for the time being, I use a 20 lb. tank. Just buy the usual BBQ grill regulator and hose and plumb into the external plumbing on the onboard tank.

Thanks for your reply, but this wasn't my question. My existing tank is fine, and I am asking about adding additional tanks by connecting directly to the fill valve.

I may be missing the question, but the fill port is big thread on connector for liquid propane being pumped into the tank. I think it would be very hard to connect a small gas carrying line to it, or very expensive.

AFAIK, you just need to tap into the gas (vapor) line after the on/off valve or your tank and before the regulator.

If you don't know how to plumb propane safely just take the van to a propane seller who does installs and repairs also and tell them what you want. IMO, you probably shouldn't do this one as a DIY.

I don't think you can connect to the fill port. Instead, search for "extend-a-stay". It's a brass fitting that you will have to plumb in but as the name implies, it's what you need.

Thanks for the replies! From what I recall, the vapor line is just a flexible hose, so is it just a matter of getting another length of hose and screwing the extend-a-stay fitting in line?

I understood your question. I was offering a practical alternative. The vapor line is the hard tubing coming off your regulator, alongside the tank. I didn't know about the extend-a-stay, and that sounds like a good idea.

Here is a link to a thread that has a couple of pics showing an install, scroll down a bit.

Make sure you know for sure what you are doing and which propane lines are which and proper techniques and practices. Blowing everyone/everything up would make for a really bad day.
