In my 25 years in law enforcement I've seen more vehicle fires than I can count. A disproportionate amount have been rv fires. A few times these fires have started secondary fires.. ive seen homes 50 feet away from the initial fire burn down in a matter of minutes.

They all seemed to have the same characteristics: at least 10 years old; these rigs often spend (unlike cars) an inordinate amount of time "sitting" outside. Hoses, seals, valves, clamps... They tend to dry out, rot, etc.. Throw in storage of large amounts of propane, gas, and sensitive electronics, fiberglass, crappy insultation... Yeah, you get the idea.

Be safe out there. RVs need periodic maintenance on more than just the motor. And replacing fire extinguishers periodically should be mandatory. A ten year old fire extinguisher often suffers from the same degradation as the rigs that are carrying them. I pray that no one was hurt from this particular fire. Thanks again for sharing. It's a good reminder for all of us.

All true of this one. Overhearing conversation on the tape, two fire extinguishers failed. The owner was taking it to sell (or it had been sold... wasn't real clear sound) because he wasn't using it much any more. So it is very likely it had been sitting for a long time.

The only positive to take out of that was that the owner wasn't living in this rig and it didn't contain all of his worldly possession... which is way too common when one of these old rigs burns.

I'm guessing that the propane system was causing the periodic flame thrower simulation. Wouldn't want to be standing around when that happened!
