Default Honda Swappable Battery Ecosystem

Honda Swappable Battery Ecosystem

Could this be the modular battery solution for future RVs?

Used for multiple purposes
Swappable
Daisy-chained

Maybe. Though you are losing out on space to make it modular. There are always trade offs.

So you would be dependent on swapping out batteries instead of charging them? Seems awfully impractical if that is the case.

Not necessarily. The advantage is that you can swap in minutes instead of hours of charging. I assume you would still have the option of charging.

Tesla briefly touted such a system. Leon once demonstrated an automated battery-swapping station for the Model S. Nothing ever came of it.

If an RV manufacturer adopted a battery standard with modules I could use in my RV or my Jeep when overlanding, and other 'appliances' when not using my RV, the cost of moving away from a fuel generator to batteries charged by solar or alternator could be less overall and a practical purchase.

It would be interesting to see how many actual duty cycles people have on expensive Lithium Ion pack arrays they have purchased for their RVs. Unless you are full-timing, a move to Lithium Ion batteries could be an expensive investment in batteries underutilized over the lifetime use of the RV.

In the Honda example they are potentially showing batteries that could be used in an RV for power when book docking or used in a moped when you are on shore power.

Swappable? Not for me. I swapped a new 20 lb. propane canister at a service station once and when I used the swapped one and took it back to swap again they refused because it was out of date. I see musical chairs on this idea too. I now only swap craft beer growlers.

These new "ecosystem" schemes are a far cry from dumb propane tanks. Each battery will have a unique identifier, and its own processor (even the battery in your iPhone has one) and memory. The life history will be tracked in a cloud service, so the operators will always know the provenance of each device, whether it has been properly cared for, and whether it is still fit for service.

(I don't have particular knowledge of the Honda proposal, but I do know how this class of service is architected.)

avanti, I simply replaced "battery" with 'human' and "operators" with 'artificial intelligence', it makes even more sense yet. Well, maybe 2038.

I think you are looking closer to 2020.

2038, 2020. Not going to worry about it or think about it I guess. It is outside my window of concern.

No swappable for me. The hassle factor just went through the roof.
