We simply don't camp when it is freezing or below. I figured out the valves (once upon a distant time), set them so the interior tank drains into the exterior tank as it is used and never changed them again. Where we live, most of the year will allow that to work just fine. That being said, it is 19 degrees in OKC right now and this old goat ain't going camping or anywhere except in front of the fireplace.

And as been stated by others, the inside tank can be drained like I have the valves set by simply opening the main drain thus draining both tanks. Works for us.

Doneworking, my last photo shows how my settings have been since I have purchased the van. The black and the red valves are parallel to the lines. I believe that is how you are saying yours are. This should ensure proper draining when I open the drain valve under the driver's side of the van.

JohnnyFry, I still don't get the purpose of the black valve. The red lever allows you to set it to external only (perpendicular to line) or both (parallel to the line). Another question: if I choose to fill the external tank only, will it back flow to the internal tank in my current settings (black and red valves parallel to the lines).

The black valve is the interconnecting valve. When it is closed the water in the internal tank will stay there (which is what you want in winter). The Red valve selects which tank you draw water from. In the "Winter" position it draws from the internal tank, in the "Summer" position it draws from the external tank. If you leave the Red valve in the "Summer" position and open the Black interconnection valve, you will draw from both tanks with the internal tank emptying first.

I hope that this clarifies things.
