Default MB Introduces New 4 Cylinder Diesel for USA Sprinter

If you are considering a new Sprinter platform you should be aware of this.

I am trying to confirm that it is the OM654, kid brother to the OM656.

Now if they just introduce it with the 48v mild hybrid start / stop which is out in Germany, but not yet on the Sprinter. Maybe 2021?

I have the 4 cylinder diesel on my 2014 Agile and it looks like very similar HP and torque. No AWD, but plenty of power and great mileage.

This is interesting since I was going to get a Transit with their new 2.0L 4-cylinder diesel to replace my 2012 Sprinter. I wanted a small diesel but Mercedes had dropped the 4-cylinder diesel they offered in 2015-2017. Then Ford just announced they are dropping the new small diesel for MY 2020 and 2021. Guess I'll be taking a closer look at Sprinters again.

Yes. We have a 2015 Agile/2014 4-cylinder and love the mileage (23 MPG average). And there's plenty of power. 4WD would be nice, but the manufacturers appear to think that the 4-cylinder diesels don't have enough power for that. Maybe they'd go for it with that electric-assist version that's coming down the pike someday...

We also have the 4 cylinder 2014 Agile. I agree that it has great mileage and plenty of power for these California hills. We don't tow anything so I have never felt the need for anything more powerful.

I have always wanted to know if the diesels placed in Sprinters have similar qualities as the diesels placed in heavy duty commercial trucks. Not that the Sprinter engines have been particularly problematic, or short life that I am aware of. Lots of emission control issues but those seem to be sorted out these days. ?

With this new engine coming into service, is it really new or an existing powerplant moving into the Sprinter chassis. I am sure that reviews will be forthcoming that will answer many questions. Perhaps this engine is a better fit with hybrid systems. I think this will revolutionary to Class B motorhomes if we see a mass production hybrid van that can also provide power to the coach. Seems this would be a simpler, more efficient and lower cost approach to derive chassis and coach power from a single power source. Must be some white paper or other material on this topic by now that I just haven't seen. Rather exciting I should think if this is possible for long range travel and power source for the coach too,

What evidence is there that these issues have been sorted?
