Default Mudflap contacted exhaust pipe and melted

Hi everyone,

I've had my Coachmen Galleria 24T since April 6, and have only a few items on my "new RV" Punch List, but there's one that seems bizarre to me.

Washing it for the first time, I noticed that the right rear mudflap had connected with the exhaust pipe, burning the mudflap rubber onto the pipe and leaving a gaping opening in the mudflap. I have no idea how, when, or where this could have happened!

It can be replaced under warranty but I'm wondering if this has happened to any other people and what they did about it.

Thanks for your input!

Rebecca

Backing up and having the flap hit something and be pushed into the exhaust pipe, can and does happen. Often it can be if you are hanging the rear over parking curbs that are fairly low, but high enough to catch a mud flap.

Default Mud flap melted onto exhaust

Pic of the exhaust pipe and mud flap. The flap is securely attached, as is the exhaust pipe. Catching on something seems to be the only reason this could have happened.

.

Not good.

The rubber can catch fire and spread to the rest of the RV.

The exhaust pipe can use a heat shield.
Cheap. Easy to make and install.

I installed the Ford mudflaps that have a bracket which stabilizes the additional width for the dual wheels.

That's a good solve for you - I like it! Don't think that will work on my van though - mine are Mercedes-Benz standard dual rear mudflaps.

You might be able to use some reinforcing doubler strips right on the flap. Big truck, with big flaps, use them to keep the flap from moving back from the wind or fluttering. They look to be some sort of metal, maybe spring steel or stainless and work pretty well, I think.
