Default now this is strange

so im monkeying with the rv today...took the pannels off the roof to rewire and have it plugged in for the first time in 6 months or so.

im inside eatting lunch when we hear a sort of soft explosive noise from the back yard.

my first thought is batterys just went so i run out back and nothing seems amiss....no smoke/ fire etc. look toward shed ( gas cans propane bottles etc in there ).
check inside of rv and batteries charging happily...nothing wrong...

hmmm....so i do a full walk around and almost miss this. WTH?



ever have this happen ?

That's a serious failure for a tire that wasn't loaded.

I'd go see a dealer about that.

looks like a uniroyal laredo made in 0711 if im reading it right.

had new tires put on when i bought it...shop said spare looked "ok"... i know better now.

Looks like and old tire. If that tire is more than 6-7 years old just be thankful you weren't driving on it.

Post a photo of the DOT code if you can.

I posted some DOT code info here: http://www.classbforum.com/forums/f5...code-1837.html

For tires manufactured before the year 2000 the last three numbers of the DOT code indicate the week and year of manufacture. So if the last three numbers are 496 that means the tire was made in the 49th week of 1996.

For tires manufactured after the year 2000 the last four numbers of the DOT code indicate the week and year of manufacture. So if the last four numbers are 5208 that means the tire was made in the 52nd week of 2008.

I've never seen anything like that

I pay attention to DOT codes now on used vehicles after determining the tires on my van dated back to 1997 when I bought it a few years ago.

It will be interesting to confirm the age of the tire. 2011 is not an old tire.

OK, now I've found several similar failures (links below) .............. and it looks like all the spare tires failed at the top ( 12o'clock approx).

So what's causing it? UV concentration at the top? Condensation causing rot?

I find it strange that every one of those failed spare tires exploded in nearly the same spot on top of a spare mounted vertically in an exposed location. Is this some physics principle? Seems like more than coincidence.

It seems to me the top of a spare tire would be under a bit more stress than the rest, with the weight of the two sides trying to pull it in opposite directions putting it under tension - even more so when you're bouncing it up & down while driving. And if the tire is never rotated or removed from the mount, it's the same spot holding up to that tension for years.

Grypon, that's plausible - but on the other hand, the weakest part of the tire is the sidewall. So, why wouldn't all those tires mounted horizontally underneath the frame and bouncing down the road explode as well? Could it be they are protected from direct exposure to sunlight? The OP's tire was also "protected" from sunlight by the cover. Fascinating
