Default Pleasure Way Ascent- AC Fan Speed

Is there a way to turn the AC fan speed down on a Pleasure Way Ascent? When the AC reaches a comfortable tempature, the low fan speed is still too loud so I am wondering if anyone has found a way to lower the fan speed.

What brand/model is the A/C? There might be someone here who has the same unit and can advise appropriately.

What is the point of this forum if the advice we get is to go to Facebook? I have a Hymer Aktiv and I had to reluctantly join Facebook because every time I found a question on this forum about the Aktiv the poster was told to go to the Facebook group.

Because people are more active on Facebook than forums!

Default Pleasure Way Ascent- AC Fan Speed

I’m looking into a remote thermostat to solve the very same problem posted by Floydj. I have a Dometic AC in my Roadtrek RS. From looking at pictures it looks like Floydj has one too. I’m hoping that a remote thermostat will actually cycle the AC off like the thermostat at my house but I am still researching it. In the very least I could mount it within reach of the bed so I can turn it off without getting up.

For model-specific questions, a model-specific group will get you a first-hand answer quickly.

For general questions, eg Onan, Truma, electrical or solar in general, this forum is the best.

Alll questions are welcomed, there is nothing wrong with asking a model-specific question here. When people direct you to other groups, they don't mean it in an ill-will way. They have hung around here long enough to know that certain questions just don't get answered quickly.

ps. The PW FB group is quiet. You won't get much attention there either.

Hey Knit, sounds like we're thinking the same way. I also think if the fan ran slower to reduce noise then the compressor would cycle as needed based on the temperature setting. Your comment about the unit turning off and on like a home ac would be helpful as well. Curious to what you find out.

I added a PWM speed controller to to fan in my Rixen's Espar heat exchanger. You can get them on eBay for almost nothing. It works great. I don't see why it wouldn't work in the A/C fan, unless maybe the fan was already PCM controlled.

I don't yet have our PW Plateau, but quickly reading the owners' manual in advance, I had the impression that if you set the A/C on "Auto" then everything - including the fan - would shut off once the set temp had been reached. Is that what you want to do?

The fan on low is almost too loud and my sense is could run at a lower speed so that is part of what I'm researching. We would prefer to have the fan run continiously and the compressor cycle on and off as needed to keep the temptature at the setting from the thermostat. The fan on low could be less RPM and I think would help the compressor keep the coach cooler. I found an article that I've not re read in more depth that supports this change. Not sure if a thermostat change would add the function or just be digital vs analog. The standard thermostat is ok so I don't want to just change it to be changing. Here is the link to the article. I will be looking at more in the next few days hopefully to find a solution that's easy for a laymen to do. » RV Fan Speed Controller | Professor Mark Csele

The unit is a Dometic 11,000 BTU Penguine Duo-Therm low profile air conditioner with the Dometic Touch Thermostat # 3316140.XXX.

Wow. That's a stab from the past. I remember seeing that article many years ago. Nobody these days would use an analog circuit for that purpose. PWM is far more efficient, less complex, and perhaps better for the fan motor. If you want to try that approach, you should certainly buy a PWM controller like the one I referenced above, rather than attempting to duplicate that circuit.

BTW: If you DO purchase one of those ultra-cheap Chinese PWM controllers, throw away the potentiometer they provide and replace it with a better one. The circuit boards themselves are fine, but the pots are often total junk.

Avanti,
Thank you for the input and comments. It sounds like you've got the answer, I am just not the person to do the install. If I present this idea to my local Camping World people, will they have the technical skills you think? Or how would you suggest I go about it? I appreciate the experience you have. Thank you.

Sadly, no. I think there is almost no chance that CW would take on such a project. It is conceivable that somebody has produced a plug-and-play way to lower the van speed. If so, they might do that. But, my suggestion is firmly in DIY territory (as was the article you referenced). It is the kind of thing that you either have to do yourself or find a geek friend who can help.

There are at least two risks in trying this:
1) As I said before, it is possible that the fan is already PWM-controlled, in which case you will get unpredictable results if you try to do it again.
2) It is possible that there is a REASON why the fan runs as fast as it does--e.g., perhaps a minimum flow is required to prevent the unit from freezing up. I don't know.

A lot of the things you will read on this list are somewhat experimental. This, I'm afraid, is one of them.
