Default Running Board Rubber Mat Adhesive

The rubber mat has come off the passenger side running board on my 1999 Roadtrek 170. This is a long (42" x 6") rubber mat that I need to stick to a painted fiberglass running board. Does anyone have experience with this, or have any recommendations for the appropriate adhesive to use? I was thinking of a contact adhesive but given the size of the mat it might be difficult to brush on, so perhaps a spray on contact adhesive? Will this work well on rubber? Will the fact that the fiberglass surface is already painted be a problem?

There are 3-M spray products for this purpose. You can get them at an auto parts store in the bodyshop section.

there is a clear all purpose adhesive called "Goop" ( home depot etc.)

I use this alot at work and it is suitable for this job

get it around the edges of the mat to form a watertight seal and keep dust out, you can mask off the painted area outside the mat

no special prep, just make sure it's clean and dry

When ours fall off, I will just clean the paint with alcohol and they mask and brush on a couple of coats of Herculiner bed liner. It will last longer than the rest of the van, based on what I have seen using it on other things.

Thank you everyone for all of these suggestions! There seems to be little consensus here and from my other research on this question. From the residue on the mat and from my research, I concluded that the manufacturer originally (20 years ago!) used a double-sided tape, and 3M makes such a tape designed for attaching trim to cars, so that is what I decided to go with:

3M Automotive Acrylic Plus Attachment Tape 06384

I will re-post to update on how it worked out!
