Default Transmission fluid level

Does anyone else have a problem with the dipstick seating correctly. I have a C190 with the 6.0 and 4L80E transmission. The dipstick feels like it hits the bottom of the transmission pan but still sticks out about 1/2" and needs to be forced in to set the lock. The original stick kept popping out so I purchased a new dipstick from the local Chevy dealer. I have verified the upper and lower dipstick tubing is correct. I also replaced the transmission pan with a AC Delco pan. Anyone have a similar problem and how did you fix it? Thank you in advance.

yes 2005 Chev chassis

similar, it will pop out not from pressure but it seems to "spring" back

I put a hose clamp around the top of the tube and can kind of lock the lever handle to that- it stays in place

So how do you get a proper transmission reading on the dipstick if it keeps popping out?

same as usual, I usually draw it out, wipe and then reinsert- mine will push all the way in ( like I said it seems to want to "spring back") then I draw it out and check the reading.

if you want i can measure mine for you tomorrow- mine is a 2005 chassis, 4L80 tranny

Sounds exactly like mine. Both my original and new dipsticks are the same length. I thought something was wrong as I have never had one spring back like this. Thanks

Check to see if your owner manual or shop manual has the "Give the indicator a full twist in order to close" instruction.

About checking the level, there's good info here: https://www.classbforum.com/forums/f...lk-2689-3.html particularly about what hot and cold means.

measured my stick is 65.5"

I had it out today ad as mentioned in another thread, dulled it with scotchbrite in hopes of an easier read

I took a pic of how I secure the dipstick in place ( thus sealing the neck) the hose clamp around the top of the tranny tube has a yellow wing screw ( under the oil dip) after I close the latch I rotate it so the loop is held by the wing

just did a slit washer and works well- on the exterior between the lever and the top plastic cap

the washer was a little thick and I have now replaced with a .88 mm piece of delrin plastic ( shaped like a guitar pick, I have these in many thicknesses). delrin is a little slippy and tough

or as dupont says:

"Delrin® acetal homopolymer (Polyoxymethylene POM) is the ideal material in parts designed to replace metal. It combines low-friction and high-wear resistance with the high strength and stiffness such applications require. It provides a wide operating temperature range (-40 °C to 120 °C) and good colorability"

any music store will have "tortex" ( delrin) guitar picks in various thicknesses
