Default What do you think of this roof top carrier for a kayak?

While wondering why anybody would risk their neck climbing up on the roof of a Travato to mount a kayak way up high I stumbled on these videos for levered roof racks for carrying ladders on high top vans. This looks more manageable and suggests the possibility of mounting a Yakima cargo carrier or maybe a spare tire on one of these systems. What do you guys think?

I think it's ingenious and should work fine...

This pdf (page 10) http://www.rambodybuilder.com/2015/van/docs/vf/drec.pdf indicates the maximum load including the roof rack should not 150kg or 330lbs.

Anyone know or any guesses if you need to also subtract a roof mounted air conditioner? Some are around 100 lbs I think.

Kayaks would be light. Spare tire is kind of heavy.

Gee, 330 lbs makes me wonder about Hymercar's loft bed. If you fit two adults up there in a queen sized bed that's averaging 300 lbs. Maybe they only recommend kids sleep up there.

So for this levered roof rack system long lighter items such as: kayaks, surfboards, a porta-bote, and perhaps a Yakima cargo carrier probably would work out. My main concern would be accidental deployment during turns or high winds while driving. I noticed they do offer driver side mounts so it wouldn't interfere with a passenger side awning.

It all depends on your personal circumstances, but I will avoid roof storage at all cost.

I either transport it inside, locally, on short trips. For extended trips (with occasional kayaking activity), I will probably buy something like a Orukayak.
