Default 2019 VS30 Mercedes Benz Sprinter

This reply is from Advanced RV in regard to the first Sprinters to be made in South Carolina. They will be a new model dubbed the VS30 and will be a 2019 model year.

"When is the U.S. plant going to be up and running?

The U.S. plant is currently scheduled to open August 2018. The VS30 will make it's world debut for press release in January of 2018. U.S. debut in April 2018. The goal is to start building the VS30s at the new Ladson plant in August/September 2018 at the new plant in Ladson. However, an underground spring was found on the grounds towards the back of the property of the new U.S. plant and caused delays of up to 6 weeks as they worked with the EPA. They moved the spring and built retention ponds. They still say they are on schedule, but there are plans to build the new model Sprinter, the VS30, in Dusseldorf in case the U.S. plant isn't ready. They are anticipating a plan to continue manufacturing in the event that the U.S. plant completion gets delayed further. Additional information: The VS30 will follow the normal ordering cycle. 2018 orders will be cut off in April 2018, and the 2019 model (the VS30) will open up for orders beginning the second week of May."

Not a lot is known about the changes but you can Google VS30 Sprinter to see some spy photos. My impression is the sides of the van will be more vertical. Wider, unknown. In 6 months (January 2018 ) information will be available. In 10 months (May 2018 ) I assume Advanced RV will be taking orders.

Building a new Class B on a brand new chassis sounds a little risky to me. I'd rather wait a year and let someone else Beta test it.

At my age and the many things I want to do, I don't have a year to wait or waste nor am I inclined to do so. It is not in my nature. Advanced RV does proven quality work and I suspect Mercedes Benz will not disappoint.

I don't know what is in store with the VS30 model but it will be a step ahead of the competition especially in safety and capacity, IMO, and will be built in America. I'm not worried. There is already a delay. Ordering a 2019 is about a year away and then there is the build and conversion. In the meanwhile I have my existing RV.

I assume a new ARV will also have the Volta Power System discussed earlier today on this forum. It will be a sweet set-up.

I would assume such. They haven't given much choice in the past. Once they develop something it is universally applied. For instance once they developed their custom lithium ion package they never went back to AGMs or even suggested them as a choice.

Time to start the "office pool" to pick the new ARV pricing? Or maybe the date the price goes over $400K? $500K?

I doubt that the Sprinter body is going to change much dimensionally. I'd expect that perhaps the chassis is stiffer, and made to accommodate the new engines. Maybe some subtle styling cues to "freshen" the look. The size has always worked well for the commercial customers and they have a large installed base of equipment and facilities to work with the sprinter. So don't expect anything radical.

I would agree based on the spy photos posted so far it looks the same from the A-pillar back, but with a new front end and likely a new interior dash design. Looks of changes likely in the drivetrain areas. Here is just one set of Spy photos:

The new Sprinter will retain the engines it has now but in updated form

Powertrains should carry over with revisions to improve efficiency. It’s possible, though, that an electric version will also be offered in some markets.
Biggest difference is that the VWCrafter and the Sprinter will be seperate vehicles with different Powerplants. Previously the Crafter used a version of the Sprinter body.

That's an interesting assumption by MotorAuthority that current Sprinter powertrains would carry over with only some modifications.

Other industry sources have suggested that Sprinter's venerable OM-642 V6 diesel would be replaced by the entirely different OM-656 inline 6 diesel with integrated DPF emissions system. I guess we'll find out for sure next year!

VW Crafters were rebadged NCV3 Sprinters up through 2016, with identical chassis and cosmetic bodywork differences but VW specific powerplants. Current VW Crafters are entirely VW native designs and share no mechanical parts with the Sprinter. Crafters will be unaffected by the 2019 Sprinter revisions.

Rockymtb is correct about Crafter.

Also not sure current Sprinter engines will be carried forward. The 2.1L 4-cylinder used in Sprinter is being phased out as previously reported by Mercedes and no longer available in 2017 Sprinters. They have the new 2.0L 4-cylinder OM-654 to replace it across their product line.

Haven't seen any information on future of 3.0L V-6 diesel now in Sprinters, although Mercedes recently announced a new Inline 6-cylinder diesel for their cars.

.

I thought the 4 cyl engine is already head and shoulder above its competitions,
yet MB chose to replace it.
They must have some incredible improvements up their sleeves.

Yes - lots of improvements. Biggest change is location of DPF and SCR catalyst right on engine along with improved EGR.

My guess is emissions compliance is driving engine redesigns. The software cheating is not confined to VW. MB has it's own issues that haven't fully come to a head.

Plus there is all this talk of a gas engine, which in my view, would be a great development and really stick it to Ford.

Looks like they are coating the bores in the aluminum block, no more sleeves? Do the current MB diesel engine have sleeves/rebuildable?

Don't worry, you'll have a built in mosquito fogger.
