Default 2357 bulb as 1157 replacement

I recently discovered that 2357 bulbs have the same base and shape as often used 1157 automotive bulbs.

Power consumption is the same on low ( 8.26W 0.59A) but a bit more on high. 26.88W 2.10A vs 28.54W 2.23A. I think the minimal extra heat will be ok in the fixtures I'll put them in.

Life expectancy on low is the same but much reduced on high (1200 vs 400 hrs). High is typically brake lights, hazard lights and turn lights so 400 hours could be a very long time for RV use.

There's a significant increase in light output: 402 lumens vs 503 which would be a 25% gain. I got the two pack Phillips 2357 bulbs for $4 so figured I try them. I might install them today.

Might I ask why you are not going to LED?

I'd go LED but the reviews seem to be so mixed on replacing the dual element type bulbs likes 1157's. Those are the combined brake / running & turn / running combos.

Single element types like 1156, 1141 bulbs with positive reviews seem easier to find. I think the recommendation is to put a red led behind a red lens, amber behind amber etc.

I just replaced all the 912 type marker light bulbs with LED. 24 on the Class A! White LED's seem OK to me behind those red and amber lenses.

I have replaced all of the park/tail/turn/brake lamps with 3057 LEDs on all of my vehicles that used the tungsten bulbs, including my RT 210.
Over several years, only one of 18 has had to be replaced.
I just got back from Yellowstone 2 weeks ago, drove through some road construction where the road was so bad it shook a rear bulb out of the socket. All I had to do was remove the lamp assembly and put the bulb back in. It works just fine.

Here's more info on incandescent Ba15d & Ba15s bulbs that I found on two Harley related forums. My only edit was to swap the 3497 (single filament) & 3496 (dual filament) bulbs to match the base type.

The gas filled 3497 & 3496 bulbs would be the brightest if you want to keep power consumption the same as 1156 & 1157 bulbs.

Can you give us more info? Did you use white or colored LED's? Had you tried both & if so which were better? Did you have to swap out the flasher module or use a power wasting resistor for the turn signals? Also brands would be useful as there has been a proliferation of LED bulb offerings in recent years.

Sorry for the late reply. I just found this. Apparently the normal email notification got lost.

I used colored bulbs, I did check out clear in a red tail light and it looked pink.
I did not use resistors on the RT. two reasons, one I don't have a problem with hyper flash, I think it gets attention faster. Two, if a LED bulb fails, hyper flash won't activate unless the resistor fails also. So no advantage to me.
On one vehicle I had to use resistors because it had sequential flash on the rear.
As for brands, the brightest with good differential between low and high output were from: https://www.ebay.com/itm/6PCS-White-...ss!84067!US!-1
However there have been many changes over even the last year.
I did a lot research, attached is a list of most LEDs used with their output. Multiply by the number of LEDs on the bulb for a good idea of total output.
Colored reduces output somewhat.

Specifications for LEDs, Halogen and incandescent bulbs used in automotive applications.

General rule, incandescent give 15 lumens per watt, Halogen 16.

3157 Incandescent on high 402 to 460 lumens

921 “ 320 lumens

7440 “ 320 “

3156 Halogen 50 watt 800 lumens

3157 w/92 1210 leds, 552 to 736 lumens

Cree XR-E Q5 107 lumens

Cree XP-G R5 260 lumens

1210 6-8 lumens

2323 46 lumens

2538 63 lumens

2835 22 lumens

3020 15 lumens

3528 8 lumens

3535 32 lumens

5050 15 lumens

5630 32 lumens

5730 50-60 lumens
