Default Dual hitch receiver

I'm thinking about using a dual hitch receiver that I have so that I can have the bike rack and a small cargo rack on the hitch at the same time.

If you have any experience with this or any advice to offer please let me know. I don't want to exceed any component rating.

My '97 GMC Savana Diesel specs show the max tongue weight as 750 lbs.
The Class V has Gross Load Capacity Tongue Weight of 1500 lbs.
The Roadmaster dual hitch receiver has a capacity of 400 lbs.tongue weight.
So all of that means that I now have a max tongue weight of 400 lbs. to work with.

I purchased the dual hitch receiver so that I could carry the bikes and still tow my car with my Class C RV. That is what Roadmaster makes this for. Instead of towing with my Class B I think a small cargo rack would be useful.
I like that I can open one of the rear doors with the bike rack on.

I placed a piece of old plywood on the Lund DIY cargo brackets to get an idea of what would fit.

I might carry a Honda EU2000i (L x W x H) 20.1" x 11.4" x 16.7" weight 46lb dry.

I'd most likely use 1/8th thick diamond pattern aluminum sheet for the cargo rack platform. The two bikes, bike rack and cargo rack would probably weigh 100 lbs. So I think that with other gear on the cargo rack maybe that would double to 200 lbs. I think that should be safe.

Any thoughts?

Default Re: Dual hitch receiver

The dual hitch receiver setup works ok. I added a couple of Plano brand boxes. They seem weather tight. They are through bolted to the platform. 6 bolts on the large box and 4 bolts hold the small box and I added a bungy cord. The whole dual hitch receiver setup does have more play than I'd like. I can open one rear door when it is setup as in the photo.

and I can load and unload it all in my garage.

I don't really like it though. I'd rather travel with nothing on back. It always comes down to what to do with the bikes................

Lots of small rigs have something on back.

I have never seen a hitch setup like that. It looks interesting but I have had thoughts of a "wheeless trailor" if I ever get the chance for extended travels. I also had the thought if I were to cary a bike or scooter that I would have a bracket just extend from the basic pad straight up instead of going into another reciever. This way would be slightly simpler and save a few pounds.
