tl;dr -Several types of jacks were tested to failure with a hydraulic press. The jacks all failed at about twice the rated load. The jackstand failed at 5 times the rated load. Put jackstands in place before you get under anything.
Jackstands also gained safety points due to simplicity and the fact that no parts of the mechanism were concealed.
