    won't it be better to run on 12v if you are at highway speed? the alternator should keep the battery topped.

    The problem with running in 12v is forgetting to turn it to some other source when you park. This was my solution until I learned how to wire up relays. Now I have the fridge set so that it will only run in 12v when the engine is on. When you park, the fridge turns off.
