I have something similar in my bedroom (no central heating :( ). Be warned mine makes lots of clicking noises so its hard to sleep if you leave it on!

I have had a similar experience We hit a deer on the way home once that was horrible . Luckily it didnt mount the bonnet of the van but could have been bad for us!

I'm no expert but I would expect that using it for IM (instant messaging) would be quite light on bandwidth but calls would use more data. As long as you could pick up a good broadband signal it...

Over here in the UK we are at about 80-90p per litre. Last year it went as high as £1.20p, I didn't drive much at that point! :)
