I have had a similar experience We hit a deer on the way home once that was horrible . Luckily it didnt mount the bonnet of the van but could have been bad for us!

I'm no expert but I would expect that using it for IM (instant messaging) would be quite light on bandwidth but calls would use more data. As long as you could pick up a good broadband signal it...
