This is exactly what I did. I even padded the bottom corners with grey foam pipe insulation. I haven' hit it yet and am contemplating removing the padding. Viewing is much better and the counter...

Yes, I took mine off the counter and remounted it on the end of the overhead kitchen cabinet. It is still readily viewable from the seats inside and I have no intention of watching it from outside....
