I have always used one of the various hitch tightener devices on our bike racks or on our stowaway cargo box. Wobble at the hitch receiver can never be a good condition.

The bike rack failures when the rack is far behind the rear wheel? These have nothing to do with the hitch receiver weight carrying capabilities.

Once you have it on the vehicle it is pretty easy to see if you have an issue with large oscillations. If you do, you can always install a couple straps like the ones I linked to before up to the top...

Yes, the dumbbell things are foam padded and hang down inside the van and get captured when you pull on the strap after the doors are closed. No issue on any damage or water leaks through the door...

And this was a standard length Sprinter so, as noted before, if you have an extended length Sprinter it is going to have an even higher risk of rack failure...
